Media Accuracy

I have been wondering and asking myself whether media is accurate and also spot on when it comes to news or the dissemination of information and i never came to a complete conclusion. I as an individual and a student in Public Relations, believe that media's content should be accurate, specific, have an element of fairness and complete straightforward content without any errors as media is the "watchdog" body. On the other hand my opinions differ a bit due to the fact that media-sphere is a very competitive field and each journalist wants to be the first one to cover and report on a story even without having the complete facts and details, i have seen such incidents on the City Press and Sunday Sun newspapers and it is understandable that they (journalists) operate on long and hectic hours and are bound to make mistakes, but doesn't mean that they should feed us half-baked news, does it- what do you think and say? www.ethics.com

The media companies or especially journalists should be honest, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information, test the accuracy of information from all sources and exercise care to avoid inadvertent error. Deliberate distortion is never permissible. Diligently seek out subjects of news stories to give them the opportunity to respond to allegations of wrongdoing, identify sources whenever feasible: the public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources' reliability. As journalists they should always question sources’ motives before promising anonymity. Clarify conditions attached to any promise made in exchange for information. www.aim.org/aim-report.  I strongly believe that they have to make certain that headlines, news teases and promotional material, photos, video, audio, graphics, sound bites and quotations do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify or highlight incidents out of context

  1. its not the truth, then its not accurate.well i say there is nothing accurate about news, cause they always emphasize one side and leave the other side of the story.

  2. We do not or people are not exposed to both sides of information, which makes me doubt their honesty

  3. I believe that there is no accuracy on news they only use what seems to be interesting and newsworthy.

  4. True that! Journalists should be fair, honest and courageous in gathering information. But these days seems like journalists are not going according to their principle. They are not being fair and accurate, as Mr Vangile has alredy said above; "there is nothing accurate about news, they always emphasise one side and leave the other side of a story.

  12. People are exposed to only one side of the story so the media is not accurate at all. There are no facts, they only tell us what they think is important and thats not fair.

    2. Dlamini... Stop lying! Some different forms of media do cover two sides of the story. Actually, it has always been like that.... unless ofcourse you are not exposed to the media world.... Oh, and if the media decide to tell you "What's NOT important"? What are you gonna do about it? Congratulate them? I mean, their sales will also drop. If you are aware..... No one is interested in boring newspapers (those that post stuff that is NOT important). ###Hope its crystal clear

    3. Come down back to earth honey, you dont tell me whats crystal clear and not. What different forms of media are you talking about since you know everything about the media world. We dont care if their sales drop or not, what we want is accurate news. You should learn a thing or two about how to speak to people

  14. a big NO to the media being accurate...they just put one side of the story on the tablet and whatever they feel will sell should be exposed to the public!!!!! the truth is hidden.

  16. "Without errors"? People make mistake..... and i believe that you are familar with the statement that says "No one is perfect". So, technical errors are always gonna be there.

Oh, and next time.... i think it will be very crystal clear if you can also provide us with a link of those articles which had errors, false information.....

its highly impossible for the media to post false stories. Remember the saying "Where there is smoke, there is definitely fire". So, there is always some big mediocre in every story.... Come on now.... They don't just wake up, guess a topix for their next article and go ahead with it.

in the newspaper industry.... we have sub-editors, chief editors.... So, do you think that they just confirm everything without even asking a particular journalist to provide a hard-evidence???????

The MEDIA is there for a reason.

  17. Mr Mkhetsane media reports should be free of errors, must be concise and clear. You are right there are editors and those of lower rankings, but I am telling you media aint accurate most times.journalists compete with each other and the first to get the story publishes it and sometimes with no enough factual statements. Thank you for providing me with your opinions
