is Media biased?
It does make a person to wonder if media is biased or not considering how certain current events are handled by the media. Reason why i doubt the credibilty of the media be it traditional or the new media is because of the recent treatment of other news especially on the broadcast media (television). in my opinion and own capacity. i strongly believe that the media is very biased and treats certain news in a form of favouritism. Looking at the current news, let's take the Vavi case for example all waht the nation heard, read and even seen on all the types of media was about his scandalous case and other prominent news were ignored or given less coverage regardless of their importance.
I firmly feel and i stand to be corrected that media can be biased in the following ways: biased by placement, this is where in the paper or in an article a story or event is printed; a pattern of placing news stories so as to downplay information supportive of either conservative views or liberal views. I can say that story placement is a measure of how important the editor considers the story and the rest that s/he sees as not of importance is chunked away. The media can also be biased by story selection which is a pattern of highlighting news stories that coincide with the agenda of either the this or that, while ignoring stories that coincide with the opposing view; printing a story or study released by a liberal or conservative group but ignoring studies on the same or similar topics released by the opposing group.
I think the media should just be upright, fair and considerate of other news as for all the news are newsworthy and should be read by all the humans/citizens, in the Public Relations point of view everything is news and should be published and distributed to all the stakeholders.www.studentnewsdaily.com

ofcoz media is biase, they make us see ceratin things in the same light as they do, sometimes you kind of wonder which one is it. I think media contributed to making the Vavi story a big deal, in a way it is making those incharge to feel pressured in punishing him. I mean Mbalula did the same thing and all he got was a little shouting only.
ReplyDeleteFavouritism I believe it is Mapule no fairness
Deleteits called agenda setting brother, the tell us what to worry about, when to worry about it.it is not the truth that we recieve from the news but some part of it.untill they start to talk about real issues facing they dont make sense to me
ReplyDeleteI also believe they omit some news and do not give raw news
DeleteMedia sure is biased..they select news they feel is important and present them to us..they select certain stories and make a big deal out of or even worse exaggerate just to up the sale..which is unfair to others
ReplyDeleteMarcia this makes me doubt the media's intergrity and accuracy
Deletethe media is biased...they just print or air stories that they feel will make headlines for days.their selection criteria on stories is sometimes based if i may say,in an unfair manner. They just make a big deal out of nothing...eg check the guptas story, they toally blew it out of proportion.
ReplyDeleteThey don't select news that are newsworthy for the audience but themselves
DeleteOne would have to agree with you on your raised issue. Yes! We know that the media might be acting towards its "power resource assumption" - where by it has the potential to influence, control, stimulate progress and so forth. But that does not mean it should dwell on unnecessary cases forever.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mr Senatla that power resource assumption they are misusing it
DeleteI hear you.... But then the Vavi case.... The thing is, you need to understand that the bad things that he did, are the ones which led him face all the repercussions.... So, that's why the media decides to take all their dirty laundry to the public. I mean, for example.... If we want to fire Jacob Zuma because he's been found guilty of corruption, rape or any illegal deed..... We will reveal all his past encounters, like gambling, drug-dealing etc... So that the public will understand the state decision.... We can't go to the public and say "No, we won't fire him because he gave students bursaries or poor people houses..... blah, blah, blah" It doesn't make perfect media sense, he made a mistake.... And that should be pointed out....
ReplyDeleteThe other thing is.... Printed media (Newspapers, magazines, tabloids etc), are all handled & run in different ways... The aim of some (True-love, Bona, Drum) magazines, is to focus mostly on building lives, motivational stories and positive stuff.... The New-Age, Governmental affairs, Political times.... aim to give their views only on political matter......... While Daily-Sun is a cheap tabloid that focuses only on fake, impossible, non-existing Myths..... And City-press & Sunday sun focuses on exposing media personalities and languishing their dos'.....
But however, when it comes to television & radio.... The do cover the bad side and good side too....
So, like I said... "It depends on the aim of the media type"..... That is why I believe that the media is a very complex world.
I hear you Bongani you are absolutely right but I still believe it is biased
Deleteyes Media is so biased but it is up to the audience to decide whether they listen to the information or not.
ReplyDeleteInteresting but I think they know that we consume all the news so they use that to their advantage Jackie
DeleteWell from my point of view the Media is biased and there is nothing we can do about that. Because the media portrays unfairly news or stories that are controversial in order to get the audience attention,to influence and of course to gain profit so yah.
ReplyDeleteSpot on Molly we don't need news that are irrelevant to us the media should be fair
Deletethe media is biased they only print nes that they feel to publish and they ommite the rest of the important news.
ReplyDeleteWhich is not fair, Ms. Matswalela and thank you for noting that the media is biased, all forms of it
DeleteThe media is very biased, they only consider stories that will make headlines and sell the paper and i think that is not fair as all news are important. They should not consider other stories more important, the public needs to hear the whole truth.
ReplyDeleteSo it is all about profit and who got the best story. Indeed they should treat all stories the same, Dlamini
DeleteIn my opnion the media is based on fair judgement in publishing true stories about the scandalous life of our fellow leaders. Televisions,Newspapers and the press sees to it that we are updated daily about what revolves in our celebs/leaders life. However they constantly provide us with true facts to support whatever they are trying to prevail about that particular well known person-not publish anything unfaily judged by the media itself.
ReplyDeleteWell-i have been following the Vavi's case with alot of interest. The judgement, howevr ,brought mixed feelings of relief nd deep sadness;relief that at least Vavi apologised to all South Africans for his indiscretion saying"I am only human and fallible.I am no saint". and sadness beacause the public might attack the intergrity of the complainant or make their own jugdement.
I still stand on my point that very South Africans biggest sex scandals are being faily publicized hence evryone is affected.
You have strongly expressed your views and I am in much support of your points Sedibeng. But as being fair I beg to differ I sense omittion on certain stories and favouritism to be exact. I can only ask myself where is openess, honesty and respect
ReplyDeletewell Media is damn biased. this media people always looks at one side of a story, like they dont't tell us what we necessarily want to know so according to me the flippin' biased.
ReplyDeleteThank you Nemirini so much bias
ReplyDeletei agrre with Kgotso Nelson Majola when he says media is biased as media tend to ignore relevent information.media focus on irrelevent information and media also like to exagerate.media like to focus on negative information and that information end up ruining the reputation of others even the nation as a whole
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Mr Mohlala that you see my point, you are truly right about exxageration that could lead to negative results
Deleteyeah media is biased and is not fair so I agree kgotso on thid one
ReplyDeleteMs.Chiwaya it is sad to note that the media should stop media selection tactics.
ReplyDeleteyes i agree with you Kgotso, but also we should keep in mind the fact that the media only publish what the audience want to hear and know about, what really matters to them. It all about what the publish wants. That business.
ReplyDeleteThe audience I believe is interested in all types of news not "prefferd reading or content" Ivy.I do appreciate that you do support my claim too
DeleteI do think the media is biased, especially when it comes to crime and corruption related issues. They always look for the bad in a particular and forget about the good
ReplyDeleteGood point indeed Mr Xesi, we seldom know of all the facts from both side of the story
ReplyDeleteYou are correct to some point but I have not experienced media being biased, all I have seen its fairness and objectivity to all the stories
ReplyDeleteSo u say media is not biased, I sense Dudu. But you shloud know that not every media platforms are ethical and straightforward. I thank you for your views
DeleteThere's so much biased information and is overloading to our mind systems it even clouds our objectivity
ReplyDeleteYes Lebo, they feed and feed us information and we consume it as it they "brainwash" us
Deletei could not agree more. it is a pity though because we as citizens we rely heavily on the media for important information
ReplyDeleteit comes as a challenge to us then if we can trust the media or not, thank you Shirley
ReplyDeletei do not really agree with you, but i think you may be rigt up to a certain point. the media is just doing its job and we can not tell them how to do it
ReplyDeletethank you for your opinion Mrs Majola, do monitor the media and you will see what i am talking about
